I like this block a lot. First, for the truth in its name—I can picture a buckwheat “spike”—and second, for the use of squares and half square triangles and the funny effect you get.

I just started a tumblr blog where I am trying to visualise the different effects when using different colours in the same pattern. Feel free to visit.

This block puzzled me because I couldn’t get rid of the thought that I sewed it already. But that could not be since I sew all the blocks in alphabetical order. I twisted my mind for several days, decided that it could not be, that I must be mistaken. Then I thought that maybe I sewed a block very similar to this, but I couldn’t think of any.

Finally, I looked through the already 100 blocks on my Pinterest board “my farmer’s wife”—and there I stumbled upon Wild Rose & Square, one of my very first blocks. Apparently, wild roses can look like butterflies. Well, the patterns are very similar though not at all alike.
